It's Only Money! Book (Re)Launch Open House
Jan 26, 2023 01:30 PM Pacific Standard Time - Jan 26, 2023 04:30 PM Pacific Standard Time
Join us Thursday, January 26th between 1:30pm and 4:30pm as we (re)launch the 5th edition of Its Only Money - The Basics We Must Know About Planning Your Personal Finances in Canada, written and re-written by our very own Mike Watkins and Jordan Dawes; respectively. Originally published in 2004 by Mr. Watkins, the 5th edition features new strategies and updated content, such as the new First Home Savings Account (FHSA) coming in April. From estate planning to budgeting, this succinct read offers improved ways to navigate our ever-changing financial system. This month’s seminar will be an open house where we want to encourage family, friends, and clients to stop by, socialize with the team, and take a copy home for either yourself or someone else that may benefit. The event will be held in our boardroom, located at 730 View Street, 9th Floor.
Appetizers and wine will be provided, and every attendee will receive a copy of the new edition – autographed, of course!

Victoria Real Estate - Market Update
Nov 09, 2022 01:00 PM Pacific Standard Time - Nov 09, 2022 02:30 PM Pacific Standard Time
Please join us on a NEW date - Wednesday, November 9th from 1pm to 2:30pm for wine, cheese, and a discussion on the local real estate market, as will be joined by one of Victoria’s top RE/MAX REALTORS® since the year I was born!
Geoff McLean, of the McLean Real Estate Group, will provide his insights on the future outlook of real estate prices as we go through what has so far been the most aggressive interest rate hiking since the ‘70s. The focus will then shift to strata corporations. Love them or hate them, stratas are legal entities that can enter into contracts, sue and be sued, and hire their own employees. As an owner of a strata lot, you are automatically a member of the strata corporation. Stratas allow owners peace of mind that there is oversight over their property and common grounds. They are becoming increasingly common as Southern Vancouver Island attempts to squeeze whatever viable land is left to build on into smaller, livable units that are part of strata corporations.
So whether you’re part of one, looking to join one, or after the rental income from one, join Geoff McLean and the Watkins Group as we discuss the many roles and responsibilities of strata corporations to help you navigate them.
Please RSVP by emailing me (jordan.dawes@cibc.com).
Boardroom seating is limited, so please reserve your spot as soon as you can!
This seminar is open to clients and guests of clients.
RSVPIncome for Life
Sep 22, 2022 07:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time - Sep 22, 2022 08:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time
Do you require supplementary income for life but are concerned about market volatility and still want to ensure there are funds left over for your beneficiaries?
Our very own estate planning specialist, Aaron McEwen, will discuss the concept of insured annuities. Insured annuities are a combination of two products; one is designed to provide income, and the other protects capital for any named beneficiaries. With interest rates on the rise and Universal Life premiums actually showing a slight decrease in price, it seems as good a time as ever to talk about these products. Annuities provide guaranteed payments that are fixed – constant – unwavering. They don’t gyrate with the market and they ensure a steady stream of income forever (or until a set date).
Insurance is a little more of a familiar concept. The goal of insurance is indemnification. It’s not to gain or lose, but to bring you back to where you were. Or, in the case of life insurance, to ensure your family estate or earning power is still intact – in the event that you’re no longer around.
Now, what if we combined these features?
Please email Jordan at jordan.dawes@cibc.com to RSVP and to be provided with a personalized link to the webinar.
RSVPIslands in the Sky
Jun 29, 2022 08:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time - Jun 29, 2022 09:30 PM Pacific Daylight Time
Join us Wednesday, June 29th as we bring in entomologist and conservation biologist of the University of Victoria, Neville Winchester, to talk about a world unlike any other...
The rainforest canopy, or life in the tree tops, is a place of many floors and is one of the most complex, beautiful, and important of the countless ecosystems on this planet. The world stage of terrestrial evolution has been the ancient rainforests. In this talk, Neville will take us on a journey that explores the high frontier rainforests of the world and their importance as we address the global impacts of stressors such as climate change. We will examine the faunal symphony that characterizes these forests… spectacular plants, birds, mammals, and insects that will be highlighted in a way you surely have never imagined. Be prepared to learn about these trees, their inhabitants, and the many intricacies of this arboreal world that engenders ‘big thinking’.
If you want to get some insight or preparation before our boardroom presentation, Neville was recently featured in David Suzuki’s, The Nature of Things when they did a series titled the Wild Canadian Weather. You can watch the “Rain” episode here. In this episode, catch a glimpse of Neville and his team of researchers ascending 100-foot canopies (Islands in the Sky) to study this unique world.
As usual, our team will provide complimentary wine and cheese!
Please RSVP by getting in touch with myself, or anyone else on the team.
RSVPSeminar Series The "Covid 15"
May 30, 2022 07:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time - May 30, 2022 09:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time
If you picked up some bad habits during this time, you are not alone!
Instead of the “Freshman 15”, you may have heard of something called the “Covid 15”. It’s the notion that we have all gained 15lbs since the start of the pandemic and perhaps, developed some poor eating habits. The good news is that it is quite possible to drop these bad habits and create new healthy ones. But, eating healthier isn’t just about knowing what we should eat; it also requires that we actually do it – long term. 30-Day Challenges and quick-fix diets aren’t the answer. In this group session, registered dietitian Kristen Yarker, MSc, RD, will apply the science of behavioural change to healthier eating. This presentation will focus on how to create good habits and how to break bad ones. We’ll also look at identifying the root causes of cravings, ways to incorporate healthier choices (ironically, while we drink wine and eat cheese…), and how to no longer feel guilty about what we should be doing, and just start doing it!
RSVPEstate Planning Workshop - Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Trusts
Apr 28, 2022 07:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time - Apr 28, 2022 08:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time
I’m about to be a father!
In fact, my wife’s due date is actually today!!
This got me thinking that I need to make sure my growing family will be taken care of should anything happen to me. As such, I thought it prudent that we all get a refresher on Wills and Estate Planning, and why it is necessary for everyone to have one in place, or to ensure it’s updated. Life happens fast, and it can be hard to stay on top of these things!
That's why you’re all invited to join us virtually on Thursday, April 28th at 3pm as we introduce our own Trust and Estate Consultant from CIBC Trust, Brian Einarson, to discuss the importance of having an up-to-date Will. Brian will also be discussing the use of Trusts and the importance of Power of Attorneys to educate and highlight just how prudent it is to have these things in place if the inevitable happens to be sooner than anticipated.
And, some other good news: This will, in all likelihood, be our last webinar before we switch to in-person to round out our seminar series for May and June!
Please RSVP to this upcoming Wills & Estates webinar by replying to this email, or reaching out to one of the team members (seeing as how I could be MIA for a few days). I will email all registrants your individualized link 24hrs before the live event. This webinar will unfortunately not be recorded, but we encourage everyone interested in this topic to RSVP anyway so that I can include you in the follow-up that will include some relevant insight.
